  • Callaqui Located in La Araucania region Approximately 99,000 hectares Area mainly Andean ranges Elevation between 690 - 2,700 meters The activity of the volcanoes Copahue and Callaqui, associated with zones of structural weakness (Liquiñe-Ofqui fault) related to the inversion of the Cenozoic Basins, would be responsible for the existence of a distinct liquid-dominated geothermal system with respect to the location of the heat source. Thermal demonstrations in the northern sector located on side of the Río Queuco correspond to waters close to the area of "outflow", while evidences in the near Nitrao hot spring would correspond to a peripheral water not associated with the geothermal system controlled by these volcanoes. In the southern sector of Callaqui volcano, the source of "El Avellano" corresponds to a type of sodium chloride water that could be indicating a deep balance and be part of the "outflow" (near the "upflow"), meanwhile thermal Copahue manifestations which do not reflect a state of equilibrium, would correspond to the area of steam-heated waters located on the top of the heat source. NE-SW and NW-SE geological structures which are associated the Copahue and Callaqui volcanic complex, reactivated by recent tectonic phenomena, have produced an increase of magmatic activity being the most probable caloric source, with the consequent production of "outflow" areas and migration of hot water through faults and fractures to the areas covered by the concession Callaqui. read more >>
  • Volcan Tacora Located in the Arica and Parinacota region Approximately 7,000 hectares Area mainly tundra and desert (Altiplano) Elevation between 4,150 - 5,900 meters The data of Aguas Calientes thermal springs on the western flank of the Tacora Volcano indicates that they occur probably associated to a NS lineament, which would indicate a structural control of them. Similarly, it is expected that laying down there would be a deep magmatic heat high, this based on the presence of fumarole activity and the deposition of sulfur, associated with the volcano activity. However, the limited chemical data that indicate the presence of acid-magmatic conditions, it is only a first approximation and is possible that these conditions may be restricted and they should therefore even be evaluated. According to the general knowledge, it was established that waters related to the young volcanoes, including magmatic vapors (H2S, CO2, HCl, SO2), rise towards the surface crossing through the underground water levels, and gases (Cl- and SO2) are absorbed and converted into hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4), producing low pH conditions in the Aguas Calientes springs, and where the fumarole activity would correspond to the flanks of the system. read more >>
